Message The best way to get a skatepark is to get organised. Form a skate committee/ association, make sure that you get BMXers, inliners and skateboarders onside. Try and get a few parents involved (I know it's awful, but in our experience, it is the skater groups with adult representation that seem to get the most money over here!!) Get a petition going- you will find that many of the people who don't like seeing you in the town centre will sign it as well as the potential park users. When you have a good number of signatures- hand the petition in to you local authority- get the local press involved. One skater group led project that we are currently working on is in a small, rural community. They manage to get in the papers on average every two weeks!! They have adults on their committee who have helped to raise about £20,000 towards their skatepark. And their skatepark is going to be better than the one installed in the next nearest large town!! Not bad for a group of 20 youngsters and their parents!!

I hope that you manage to attain your dream. If not, then I hope that you manage to find some great spots to skate in anyway!!

Julie

Message I come from Kilkeel and i skate. I regulairly s/p go up to Newry to skate but always get put by other people. Last time some random old person inside a butchers shop shouted "get the f**k away ya skateboarders." I think it would be great to have a park free from hassle

Message I am currently investigating the possibility of opening a privatly run skate park in the newry area, i am at very early stages and to create the most ideal park to facilitate all I would request feedback from all interested parties/ potential users, Skateboarders, BMX, inline, etc as to thier opinions onthis, suggestions on layouts, ramps, facalities, etc including the unfortuante but most likely level of entry fee they would be willing to pay for entry into such a facality, either hourly or daily rates.
All and every comment is welcome and can be sent directly to newryskateboard@hotmail.co.uk.
